The Break-Up Shoes....

Last night I met a friend for coffee and we got to talking...one conversation came up around the fact that her boyfriend was moving in with her and all the things they were doing to prepare for the move and to make room for him in the home. Her closet was a topic.

As a single woman her closet was hers...and if you don't know what that feels like...let me tell you...it's wonderful! Not having to share space with another and having a closet filled with clothes (probably many different sizes too...just in case)...can make a girl smile. Then comes our shoes... boots...wedges...flats... and for some...spike heals....shoes...shoes...shoes...I digress....but I'm smiling.

So...to prepare for her boyfriend moving in, my friend has been going through her closet and getting rid of things she doesn't wear and giving it to friends and donating it. One of the things she also went through was her collection of "break-up shoes". When she said that I must have had a look because she went on to explain that for every time they had an issue...she'd buy shoes...and after three years of their relationship... she had a lot of shoes.
Hearing that made me laugh and think...yep...I've done that. I've soothed my emotions by buying shoes. Heck I can admit it...I've bought more than shoes to soothe my emotions...and some of those things still have the price tag on them hanging in my closet.

Have you ever shopped to soothe your emotions? Is the proof in your closet? Maybe it's not clothes or shoes...but something else...what is it for you? How do you soothe your emotions? Do you know why you shop to soothe? Why you do what you do? Do you know why? Give it some thought okay? If what you do leaves scars behind...give thought too to what you can do differently moving forward.

It took me some time to realize what I did when I was feeling my emotions...I shopped and spent money on things I didn't need but made me "feel better"...and that's just one thing I did. Understanding the reasons why it made me feel better...was a step too. Learning what I could do differently to soothe my emotions...was a learning curve to say the least.

There are still days when I give in and I soothe myself by buying something I know I don't need but which makes me feel better...and then a few days later when I'm feeling better...I take the item back. Buying it served it's purpose and I know I don't need it...so back it goes. By doing this...it allows me keep my budget and it allows me to do what I need to care for my needs...and it prevents my closet from exploding. (Though I will admit...my shoe collection has grown. There are some things a girl just can't get rid of.)

take good care of you eh?
