I was watching the Fifth Estate this weekend and they did an episode investigating Health Canada and how easy it is for some supplements to make it into our marketplace and how un-regulated the supplement market really is. I was surprised to say the least. The show even introduced people producing and selling vitamin and mineral supplements in their own kitchen! Now I'm all for being self-employed but seriously!
The investigation further showed that almost 90% of all supplements brought to Health Canada for approval make it to the market for our consumption and in a very short time frame too...and that's not the scariest thing...test show that some of the supplements aren't even what they claim to be. Some were found to have none of the ingredients the bottle laid claim to. I should also add that these supplements don't face the same stringent testing and expectations of the pharmaceutical companies when they seek approval for medications. Further investigation showed that even the doses recommended can be more dangerous than they are helpful...we can actually take too much.
With fast food diets and foods of convenience...it can make getting the needed minerals and vitamins from out diets difficult I realize that...but...what's on the end of your fork is the best place to find them... not in a bottle.
I would highly recommend you check out cbc.ca and look up the episode...it's been shared on the Facebook page too to make it easier for you. There are options and I don't think a bottle of pills is always the best one. Be informed....be educated...and make your choices wisely.
