Because our society hasn't caught up as whole, there is still a lot that is misunderstood about mental health. Some people still think it's something "to get over" or to "snap out of". It's not...and until this changes there will still be great misunderstanding.
We can't wait for society to catch up though can we? No we can't. So until it does...learn how to care for and look after, your mental health. You can do this and you need you to do this.
How do you care for your mental health or do you?
1 talk about your feelings...whether its with a trusted friend or a professional counsellor...talk about how you're feeling...openly...honestly and with love and care for yourself...do not beat yourself right now okay? talk with care to and about yourself
2 eat well...sometimes when we're lost we forget to eat...or we eat things that aren't healthy...be mindful of your food choices and make sure you eat every day
3 keep in touch...it's easy to isolate yourself but don't...reach out and keep in touch with the people you trust and those who can make you smile even when you don't want to...they're here to help
4 take a break! you need one! and you deserve one...do something that makes you smile and feel good about being you...remember to breathe and settle your thoughts...meditation, relaxation...take a break!
5 accept who you are...and all that you are...perfectly imperfect yet perfectly you...and talk positively to yourself...tell yourself what you know you need to hear okay?
6 keep active...I know some days you're hurting and you don't want to move but move! get out for a walk...dance in the house like no one is watching...keep moving okay? find a hobby and get lost in it
7 drink responsibly...sometimes when feeling down and out we think getting a good "drunk on" will help...it won't...don't get lost in a bottle...only more problems can be found there if you do
8 ask for help...there is help out there...confidential crisis lines...group support...professional counselling...family doctors and pharmacists too...reach out and ask for help...even our family and friends can be an invaluable source of support...ask for it and take it
9 do things you are good at...when feeling down it's easy to focus on what we're not good at...so instead? surround yourself with the things you are good at and then go do them...remind yourself of the success you've had...you're not the failure you think you are okay? believe that!
10 care for others...whether its an animal, a family member or even a stranger...do one thing each day for someone else...just to make them smile...you'll smile too in return
We can't wait for society as a whole to catch up...but looking after our own mental health is possible and it's something well within our abilities to do. Please...look after yours okay?
