BUT...
We can get as active in our lives as we are capable.
I know it hurts...but I also know that you will hurt worse if you don't get moving.
Think about it...when you don't use something...what happens? it gets rusty, stiff and hard to use doesn't it? well...just like an unused tool that gets rusted out...so can our bodies and muscles.
Without exercise and movement we will get stiffer and we will continue to deteriorate. Now I'm not saying you have to go and do some big crazy weight bound work-out...but I am saying you need to get as active in your life as you are physically capable.
The benefits listed above are real but so are the consequences of immobility...muscle weakness...muscle loss...increased pain...decreased abilities in movement...it's all real...and it makes us hurt more. Our abilities slide and it takes our mental and emotional well being with it too at times. Has this happened to you?
Have you noticed that as your physical abilities decrease, your emotional pain increases? The negative self defeating talk increases too doesn't it? You're reminded of what you can't do and reminded of how much you hurt. But when we take control of our physical and we move in all the ways we are capable of moving...we can turn this around.
Give some thought to how you can increase your activity even when you're feeling pain...here are just a few to get you started...talk to you doctor for other ideas
- gentle stretches like yoga and tai chi
- flexing and releasing muscles
- walking
- swimming
- dancing
Exercising isn't always about working up a sweat...it's about keeping our muscles moving. Even with gentle movement you can make a difference in your life.
