Helpful adaptive tools and devices...

There are many adaptive devices that are available now that help make things easier when your body is hurting and today I thought I would take a look at a few. Now please keep in mind that I am not endorsing any product nor manufacturer, I am simply sharing a few examples of what is available in the market today for your personal information.

Some of these items can be expensive and not always covered with some drug plans.  Some items can be found in department stores and even some pharmacies, and there are other adaptive items that can only be found in medical supply stores or home health care stores. You may also be able to find suitable items gently used.

If you have any questions about what the devices you see here please speak with you doctor, occupational therapist or other health care professionals.

The picture on the left is a closed end button hook...it helps when the fine motor skill movement of doing up your buttons causes your hands to cramp. It's very easy and simple to use and fairly inexpensive too. There are various styles of hooks to choose from but it's best to find one that sits well in your hand is light and easy enough for you to use.
Certain button hooks like the one on the right....also work well with zippers. This style of hook will have an open end instead of a closed end.

The shoe horn...this is one helpful tool! It comes in various styles and sizes.

Your physical needs will dictate if you need a small hand held horn or a longer stick style like the one featured here.

Shoe horns can also be found in some shoe stores/sections, cobblers, as well as pharmacies and are reasonable in their cost.

For us short people and for when you can't bend to lift things this tool comes in handy. There are various styles of the reacher and it can be found in many different stores...even some hardware stores too.

The dressing stick...depending on your limitations, getting dressed may cause you some stress and strain and make dressing painful. This stick is designed to help with most items of clothing as shown.

This tool is called the sock aid...its similar to the shoe horn but for your socks instead.

The lift chair....a new twist on your favourite "lazy-boy recliner"...this chair can take you from standing to sitting...to laying down with your feet stretched out to standing again. Various options are available with these chairs like heated seats and vibration massage as well.
